Add Headlamp Clips To A Helmet For $1

Instead of having separate trekking and biking lights, I like to use the same headlamp for all disciplines of adventure racing.  It saves on weight and I only have to keep one type and size of extra batteries.

My previous helmet – a very old Giro – was the perfect shape for securely stretching a headlamp over it.  I used that helmet for many years, but it had a few dents in it and really needed to be retired.

It was replaced with a Specialized S-Works MT, which is a huge upgrade in fit, feel, and function.  I wish I’d not been so cheap and updated that old brain bucket sooner.  However, the one negative is that my headlamp couldn’t stretch around the new helmet and stay on securely.

I couldn’t find any ready-made solutions that looked to be compatible with this helmet, so I had to create my own.  While browsing around at the local REI,  I found a pack of 3/4 inch Triglides for only 80 cents and had an idea.

I modified the triglides with a dremel (click on the pics for better views), and used zip-ties to attach them to my helmet.  Depending on your helmet, finding the best location for the clips may take some experimentation and trial-and-error.  I used two clips in front and two in the rear, which seems to do a good job of holding my headlamp, but I may try moving them a bit to improve the fit.

This mod hasn’t been race tested yet, but I don’t expect to have any issues with it.  If I do, I’ll come back and update this post.
